CBN Opens New Regulatory Sandbox for Crypto Firms
Nigeria’s crypto industry is moving towards a more structured regulatory environment.
The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has opened applications for the second cohort of its Regulatory Sandbox Programme, with a dedicated Virtual Asset Service Provider (VASP) Track for crypto-related businesses.
Applications opened on 12 August 2026 and close on 31 August 2026.
The new VASP Track will allow eligible companies to test innovations involving virtual assets, stablecoins, payments, settlements, custody, wallets and other digital asset infrastructure under CBN supervision.
Why Does This Matter?
A regulatory sandbox gives companies a controlled environment to test new products while regulators assess the potential risks and benefits.
For crypto businesses, this could provide a clearer path to developing new products while meeting regulatory expectations around areas such as cybersecurity, consumer protection, risk management and operational resilience.
For users, stronger regulatory oversight could eventually mean more transparency and safer digital financial services.
However, there is an important distinction: participating in the CBN sandbox does not mean a company has been fully licensed to operate. Participants can only operate within the specific testing conditions approved by the CBN.
Another Step Towards Crypto Regulation
The move comes as Nigeria continues to strengthen its approach to digital assets.
The government has introduced a framework for coordinating virtual asset regulation, while the Nigeria Revenue Service has released guidelines on crypto taxation. The SEC is also continuing its efforts to bring virtual asset companies into a more formal regulatory framework.
The message is becoming clearer: crypto innovation is still happening, but regulation is becoming a bigger part of the industry.
The Jeroid Take
As Nigeria’s crypto ecosystem develops, trust, security and transparency will matter more than ever.
For users, this means looking beyond rates and convenience when choosing a crypto platform. Understanding how a platform handles security, compliance and customer protection is just as important.
Nigeria’s crypto market is evolving, and the CBN’s new sandbox is another step in that journey.
